Gabrielle, an African-American mixed teen, is possessed by a Yoruban masquerade costume in a suburb of Los Angeles as a result of the ancestors possessing the costume trying to find their way home to Africa.
Gaby's father and stepmother hire a few Yoruban priests to get the spirits out of their prized daughter, unveiling muted issues of addiction, cultural assimilation, and identity.
