A young attorney and his first client fight power, corruption, and racism in this highly stylized, laugh out loud satire.
John Mengaldas graduates law school at the top of his class. Believing highly in himself, he carries his awards and trophies with zealous pride. Using Shakespeare’s line “All the world’s a stage” part of John’s life unfolds in a crowded theatre of critics. A magical character named Spector, acts as a mentor for John, but not a very good one.
John is assigned his first client, a ridiculously injured woman of color, Alice. The other part of this imaginary life takes place on a giant game board. Together they enter a wild and one-sided contest and compete to get an injury settlement from a large and powerful corporation. Along the way they meet a comical Senator and State Representative duo who present a constant barrage of silly laws and rules to complicate the game. Then of course, a defense attorney with an Elvis complex, stands to block every move.
Finally, after many hoops and a hilarious delay scene, they get their day in court. Clearly the odds are against them in this farce of a courtroom, complete with a drunk judge and a jury of all white men. Alice proves she is a fighter and John learns about himself, justice, and the meaning of winning.
